Shot Challenge
10,000 Shot Challenge
Green Bay Chilis Hockey is excited to introduce the 10,000 Shot Challenge, a new off-season & off-ice player development incentive program for 2025!
Players who shoot (and log) practice shots from now to the start of school in September obtain their spot in 10,000 Shot Club and earn the chance to get a Chilis 10,000 Shot Club Member t-shirt. September 15th is the final day to submit shot totals from the summer challenge.
It's said that great hockey players are made off of the ice. There's simply no way to get enough ice time in! It's also no secret that hockey players can improve their shot and game with regular off-ice practice - hence the Green Bay Chilis 10,000 Shot Challenge!
To improve, it's critical that players set goals, dedicate regular time to training, find ways to make it fun, and record practice shot totals honestly. To help your child, choose shots that are appropriate for your player's age level. Tiny kids might benefit from wrist shots, short snapshots, backhanders, attempting to lift the puck (you might want to purchase a few 4oz blue pucks in the beginning), and shooting in different positions (one foot, alternate forward feet, from their knees, sitting on a bucket, etc) will keep things feeling attainable and fun.
Older players can start to train for slap shots, tough angles, play with different stick flexes, utilize heavier training pucks, use rollerblades, and more!
Green Bay Chilis knows that shooting isn't the only skill we can work on with this program. To encourage players to practice stick-handling, for every 15 minutes of dedicated stick-handling practice you do - please record 50 shots (even though you didn't shoot)!
Give some thought to your practice process. Space and time are probably limited - try to develop a practice space and routine that makes it easy for players to practice on their own. If you have to move cars, drive somewhere, or set up gear - it's probably less likely to happen. This is meant to be fun but keeping a regular practice schedule might help some players and families.
A tarp hung near the wall in a spare room, the garage, basement, or outside might work. A net in the driveway, patio, or yard might do it. Hockey shooting tarps with goalies and nets printed on them might make the time more enjoyable. A cheap canvas painter's drop cloth and a can of red spray paint to make the bars of a hockey net are an easy alternative. And who could forget hanging soda cans from a big box works, too!?!
Once you have a practice space, you'll need your stick, some pucks, hockey gloves (encouraged), and record sheet.
HAVE FUN CHILIS!!!
10,000 Pro Tips
Set simple, attainable goals and then beat them.
Find ways to keep your practice time enjoyable. Compete with your friends. Practice new things and target perceived weaknesses (like backhand, angles, silly positions, etc). This doesn't need to feel like work!
Very young players should start with blue pucks (if available).
Do as much as you can to improve your practice space and then start practicing!
All shots should be hard & accurate. Think about shot mechanics sometimes and just shoot sometimes. Shoot with a purpose!
Tracking shots easy! Simply make a slash through the box and consider that one done!
Here's a great Minnesota Hockey article on the value of the 10000 Puck challenge.
